Origins and Early Lineage
The Nkwanyana lineage traces back to Mtoboza, an early leader within the Ndwandwe Kingdom. During the upheavals of the Mfecane under King Zwide kaLanga, conflict caused the dispersal of his people. Those who followed Mtoboza later emerged as the AmaNkwanyana clan, a lineage recognized within the Zulu Kingdom.  Read more...
Mathunjana Nkwanyana
Mathunjana Nkwanyana, son of Sixaba, is remembered for his courage and loyalty in Zulu royal history. He protected Prince Mpande from execution by King Dingane, enabling Mpande to later become king of the Zulu Kingdom (1840–1872). In gratitude, King Mpande granted Mathunjana land at eNgudwini near Showe, an area still known as eMaNkwanyaneni, formally recognizing the AmaNkwanyana family. Read more...
Expansion, Settlement & Survival
Mathunjana later crossed the Thukela River, expanding the AmaNkwanyana presence toward Ntunjambili near Kranskop, where future generations settled. Despite upheavals such as the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, the lineage endured through resilience and unity. During this period, Mbokodo kaMangena established a new AmaNkwanyana royal branch at Mabhanoyini, known as kwaMangena. Read more...

The royal succession of the Mangena lineage reflects continuity and resilience, passing from Mbokodo kaMangena to Vutha, Ndabingehlele, King Fana Nicholas Nkwanyana, and King Mhlengi Nkwanyana, the current reigning monarch at Mabhanoyini, Mtshezi.
